Government launches Gernas RANA at pesantren, madrasah
The program began at Al-Hamidiyah in Depok and will later expand to schools to curb physical, sexual, verbal and digital abuse.
The government has started carrying out the National Movement for Safe and Comfortable Spaces for Children (Gernas RANA) in pesantren and madrasah, launching the program at Pondok Pesantren Al-Hamidiyah in Depok on Sunday. Coordinating Human Development and Culture Minister Pratikno said the initial phase will focus on education units under the Ministry of Religious Affairs before expanding to schools. The movement involves the Ministry of Religious Affairs, the Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection, the Executive Board of Nahdlatul Ulama, the Central Leadership of Muhammadiyah, and the Indonesian Child Protection Commission. The government is targeting the prevention of physical, verbal, sexual and digital violence. Al-Hamidiyah was chosen because it already has internal rules, an ethics committee and a complaint mechanism. Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar said thousands of pesantren and tens of thousands of madrasah are ready to support the rollout.
