GOP map redraws backfired as Democrats held most targeted House seats
What's new: Republicans redrew 15 districts over two years, and projections showed Democrats keeping about two-thirds of them.
Republican efforts to redraw congressional districts ahead of the 2026 midterms largely failed, with Democrats holding most of the House seats the GOP had targeted and also gaining in California after Democrats redrew five districts there. In Texas, Democrats were projected to keep seats held by Henry Cuellar and Vicente Gonzalez and win the new 35th District, while Republicans were projected to flip Texas' 32nd. In Florida, Democrats were projected to win three redrawn districts and were narrowly leading in a fourth. Democrats also held altered seats in Ohio and Alabama. The setbacks came as Republicans tried to use mid-decade redistricting in several states to blunt broader election losses.
