Germany probes Russian links to Berlin-area weapons cache
Why it matters: investigators suspect the guns were meant for attacks in Germany, part of a wider sabotage threat tied to Moscow.
German authorities are investigating possible Russian links to a weapons cache discovered last October in woods on the outskirts of Berlin. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said domestic intelligence flagged the site, and Berlin state police helped recover two handguns and ammunition. Security officials believe the stash may have been intended for attacks in Germany. German media, including Süddeutsche Zeitung, NDR and WDR, reported the cache may have been meant to support targeted killings for Moscow. Dobrindt said authorities disabled the guns and watched the site for months, but no one returned. Prosecutors are also investigating a suspect held in Romania in connection with planned parcel bomb attacks.
