Germany moves 2 ships toward Red Sea for possible Hormuz mission

What's next: Any mine-clearing operation would need approval from Iran and Oman, and shipping groups warn traffic may take weeks to normalize.

Germany is sending two vessels toward the Red Sea as European allies press plans for a defensive mission to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz after the U.S.-Iran ceasefire framework. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said the minesweeper Fulda and supply ship Mosel were passing through the Suez Canal, with underwater drones, mine divers and protection teams also being prepared. France and Britain have been developing a multinational plan focused on mine clearance and possible escorts for commercial ships. The proposed operation aims to reassure crews, shipowners and insurers after the conflict disrupted energy shipments. Pistorius said any participation would depend on developments in U.S.-Iran talks and would require approval from Iran and Oman.
