Georgia judge exits election-records case after DOJ bias challenge

What's new: Eleanor Ross cited a possible perception of bias tied to a Fani Willis campaign event after the Justice Department sought her removal.

U.S. District Judge Eleanor Ross recused herself from a Justice Department lawsuit seeking Georgia's unredacted statewide voter list after the department challenged her impartiality. In a Tuesday order, Ross wrote that she was stepping aside "out of an abundance of caution for the potential perception of bias." The filing pointed to her attendance at an event for Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, whose prosecution of President Donald Trump over the 2020 election made the matter politically charged. Ross had already been privately reprimanded after an investigation found she had sex with a police officer in her chambers, attended a partisan event and initially lied when confronted about the allegations.
