M7.7 quake in Mindanao triggers tsunami alert in Indonesia

BMKG placed 15 coastal areas on alert, including Manado, Palu, Ternate and Bitung, after the offshore quake.

A magnitude 7.7 tectonic quake shook the south coast of Mindanao, Philippines, at 06.37 WIB Monday and triggered a tsunami alert in several parts of Indonesia. BMKG said the shallow quake was caused by subduction-zone activity, with an upthrust mechanism, at a depth of 47 kilometers. The epicenter was in the sea, about 244 kilometers northwest of Karatung Island, North Sulawesi. Tremors were felt in Morotai, North Gorontalo, Ternate, West Halmahera, Manado, Minahasa, Palu, Bitung and several other areas in Sulawesi and North Maluku. BMKG issued alert status for Minahasa, Bolaang Mongondow, Manado, North Minahasa, Buol, Gorontalo, Talaud, Palu, Donggala, Ternate and Bitung, among others. By 07.11 WIB, BMKG had recorded two aftershocks, the largest at magnitude 6.7, and there were no reports of damage.
