M7.7 quake in the Sulawesi Sea triggers tsunami alert in Indonesia

BMKG has recorded 9-18 cm waves in North Sulawesi and North Maluku, while coastal residents under Siaga were told to evacuate.

A tectonic quake of magnitude 7.7 in the Sulawesi Sea on Monday at 06:37 WIB triggered an early tsunami warning in several Indonesian coastal areas. BMKG said the epicenter was at a depth of 47 kilometers northwest of Karatung Island, North Sulawesi, in the Mindanao sector of the Philippines. Areas under Siaga include Manado, Minahasa Utara, Minahasa Selatan, Buol, Kepulauan Sangihe, Gorontalo, Toli-Toli, Palu, Donggala, Ternate, and Bitung. Waspada status applies to Tidore, Bulungan, Nunukan, Tarakan, Kutai Timur, Bontang, and Berau. BMKG also detected minor tsunami waves of 9-18 centimeters in Ulu Siau, Melonguane, and one point in Maluku Utara, and recorded two aftershocks of M6.7 and M5.9 through 07:11 WIB.
