M6.4 quake shakes Simalungun, BMKG says no tsunami risk
The 168-km-deep inland quake was felt in Tebing Tinggi and Pematangsiantar, with no aftershocks detected by 18.16 WIB.
A magnitude 6.4 earthquake shook southeastern Simalungun, North Sumatra, on Saturday (15/8) at 17.54 WIB. BMKG said the epicenter was on land about 11 kilometers southeast of Simalungun at a depth of 168 kilometers, so it did not pose a tsunami threat. BMKG earthquake and tsunami director Wijayanto said it was a medium-depth quake caused by subduction-zone activity, with a down-dip strike-slip mechanism. Shaking reached V MMI in Tebing Tinggi, Kabanjahe and Limapuluh, and IV MMI in Raya, Panombeian Pane, Panei, Pematangsiantar and Pangururan. By 18.16 WIB, BMKG had not detected any aftershocks and urged residents to stay away from cracked or damaged buildings.
