Shallow M5.3 quake shakes northeast of Suez, Egypt
Egypt activated a national emergency response and raised hospital alert levels, with no casualties reported so far.
A shallow 5.3-magnitude earthquake shook northeast of Suez, Egypt, on Monday (3/8) at around 00.00 GMT. The USGS said the epicenter was about 41 kilometers north-northeast of Suez at a depth of 10 kilometers. An AFP journalist in Cairo reported the tremor was also felt in the capital. Egypt's National Seismic Network placed the epicenter about 61 kilometers northeast of Sharm El-Sheikh, in the Gulf of Aqaba area. There have been no reports of deaths or damage so far. After the quake, Egypt's Ministry of Health and Population activated a national emergency response plan and raised hospitals to the highest alert level while assessing the impact.
