Gas-like odor spread across central Singapore as NEA probes source

What's new: Air readings stayed within the usual range even after complaints from Kallang, Novena and nearby areas.

Singapore's National Environment Agency is investigating reports of a gas or chemical smell that spread across parts of the central region late on July 16 and lingered into the next day in some areas. The agency said it began getting feedback around 11 p.m. from places including Tanjong Rhu, Kallang and Novena, then checked conditions on site and at nearby monitoring stations. It said air quality has remained within the usual range so far. Social media users also reported the odor in Balestier, Jalan Besar, Lavender and near Suntec City, describing it as gasoline-like or sulphurous. NEA asked the public to report unusual smells through the myENV or OneService apps while it works to identify the source.
