FTC, 4 states sue WPATH over transgender treatments for minors

The Federal Trade Commission and four Republican-led states sued the World Professional Association for Transgender Health on Wednesday, accusing the group of misleading parents and doctors about the safety, effectiveness and medical necessity of transgender treatments for minors. The complaint challenges WPATH guidance on puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones and surgeries, and alleges the organization dropped age-based recommendations for some procedures while not fully disclosing risks and side effects. Alaska, Iowa, Nebraska and Texas joined the suit. WPATH rejected the allegations and said its standards support individualized patient care. The case follows WPATH's earlier court fight to block an FTC investigation, which a federal judge temporarily halted in May.
