French students plan fresh protests as school unrest enters week 4

Why it matters: The unrest has led to more than 6,800 detentions, mostly minors, and pushed the government to offer teachers and budget changes.

French high school students are preparing a new round of protests on Oct. 13, seeking to keep up pressure over crowded classrooms, old buildings and teacher shortages as the movement enters its fourth week. The government said more than 96% of lycees were open on Oct. 9, but student groups argued official concessions fell short. Education Minister Edouard Geffray said 3,000 substitute teachers would be sent to the 114 worst-affected schools, while Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu pledged budget 2027 changes. The justice ministry said more than 6,800 people have been detained since the unrest began, 86% of them minors. The government has also suspended stun grenades after injuries and is investigating 18 alleged cases of police misconduct.
