French court ruling could block Le Pen from 2027 race
Why it matters: If the ban stands, National Rally would likely turn to Jordan Bardella as its presidential candidate.
Marine Le Pen was due to learn July 7 whether a Paris appeals court would keep in place an electoral ban that could stop her from running in France’s 2027 presidential election. Le Pen, 57, appealed after a March 2025 ruling convicted her over the misuse of more than 4 million euros in European Parliament funds and barred her from public office for five years. The lower court also imposed a 100,000-euro fine and a four-year prison sentence, with two years suspended and two to be served under home detention. If the ban is upheld, National Rally would likely put forward party president Jordan Bardella, 30, who polls suggest could still reach a runoff.
