France seeks charges after senator's racist posts target Mbappe
What's next: The French football federation moved to refer the case to prosecutors after Paraguay's World Cup loss to France.
France forward Kylian Mbappe condemned Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla after she posted racist remarks on X following Paraguay's loss to France in the World Cup round of 16. Mbappe called Amarilla "a despicable woman" and said she did not represent Paraguay. The French football federation said it would pursue criminal proceedings, calling the posts abhorrent and unacceptable and saying it would report the matter to the public prosecutor's office. The dispute came after France beat Paraguay on Saturday, with Mbappe converting the winning penalty to send France into a quarterfinal against Morocco in Boston. Earlier, former Paraguay goalkeeper Jose Luis Chilavert had also drawn criticism for saying Paraguay were facing "a squad from Africa."
