Looting spreads as cost-of-living protests rock France
Luxury shops, bakeries, phone stores and supermarkets were looted in Paris, Marseille, Lille and Nice, with vehicles set ablaze.
France's large wave of protests turned increasingly chaotic as shops were looted and fires broke out in several cities. In Paris, looters broke into stores, including a skin care shop near Place de la Republique and a phone store, then threw goods into the street. Some groups also entered supermarkets, taking bottles of alcohol and cans of drinks to throw at police. Fires also broke out, including at the bar La Barrique, while cars and bicycles were burned at various points across the capital. Similar unrest was reported in Marseille, Lille and Nice, with targets ranging from luxury goods stores and bakeries to sports shops and motorcycle dealers. The action began as student protests over school facilities, then widened to concerns about the cost of living, fuel prices and public services.
