France records first human Shamonda case after patient dies
Why it matters: Health agencies are probing whether the livestock virus caused the death, though France says the public faces no current risk.
France has identified the first known human infection with Shamonda virus in a patient in Lyon who later died, marking a rare spillover of a livestock disease previously not known to infect people. French authorities said the patient, who was severely immunocompromised and being treated for a serious illness, likely caught the virus from a midge bite in eastern France, where it circulated among animals this spring and summer. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control and the World Health Organization are monitoring the case while investigators examine whether the virus caused or contributed to the death. France said no risk to the general population has been identified so far.
