France orders review of 70,000 child-abuse cases after girl's death

Why it matters: The move followed nationwide protests and renewed scrutiny of judicial failures after earlier complaints against the suspect went nowhere.

France ordered prosecutors to review 70,000 open allegations of violence against minors after the killing of 11-year-old Lyhanna triggered outrage over failures in the justice system. Lyhanna's body was found last week near Fleurance in southwestern France after she disappeared on May 29. The main suspect, 41-year-old Jerome B., had previously faced multiple allegations of sexual abuse involving children but had not been convicted. Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin called the case a "terrible failure" by the state and told prosecutors to examine all pending child-violence complaints by July 14 as an absolute priority. More than 60,000 people joined protests across France, while about 6,000 marched silently in Fleurance with Lyhanna's family.
