France deploys massive police force after 500,000-person riot

Partial curfews have been expanded in Paris and other cities, while several countries have issued travel advisories.

The French government is preparing a large police deployment to secure further protests this weekend after a national cost-of-living demonstration turned violent on Saturday. Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu acknowledged security had been inadequate amid criticism in parliament. About 500,000 people were reported to have taken to the streets nationwide before clashes and looting broke out. The government then imposed partial curfews in Paris and several other cities, including restrictions at Place de la République and the Les Halles shopping district. Residents are also barred from gathering on the Champs-Élysées, while police have temporarily prohibited carrying jerrycans or bottles containing gasoline. The Federation of Trade and Retail said more than 3,000 stores were affected by the unrest.
