France counts 1,500 looted shops after nationwide protest violence

What's next: Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu is leading a crisis meeting as pressure grows for an inquiry before more demonstrations in two weeks.

France's government faced mounting pressure Monday after a weekend of nationwide unrest left about 1,500 shops and businesses looted or destroyed and roughly 1,000 police officers injured, seven seriously. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu convened a crisis cabinet meeting as authorities reviewed one of the worst outbreaks of public disorder in modern French history. The protests began over rising living costs and deteriorating public services, including education, before masked groups and vandals joined in. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez offered to quit, but President Emmanuel Macron kept him in place and told him to focus on restoring safety and bringing those responsible to justice.
