Fontainebleau wildfire scorches 800 hectares, shuts A6 south of Paris

What's new: More than 400 firefighters and water-bombing aircraft were deployed as the blaze disrupted rail travel during a heatwave.

A fast-moving wildfire in the Fontainebleau forest south of Paris burned more than 800 hectares overnight, forcing partial closures on the A6 highway and disrupting high-speed rail traffic during a busy summer travel weekend. French authorities sent two water-bombing planes, two helicopters and an observation aircraft to help more than 400 firefighters battling the blaze near Vaudoue and Arbonne-la-Foret, about 60 kilometers from the capital. Around 15 homes were evacuated, and officials said the fire was still spreading after nightfall grounded aircraft. The Paris region is in its third heatwave since May, with hot winds helping drive flames through the historic forest.
