Flash flood at Grand Canyon kills 1, leaves 15 missing
South Rim will enter Stage 4 water restrictions Monday, and in-park lodging has been suspended after flood damage.
A flash flood at Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona, killed one person and left 15 others missing in the inner canyon area. The U.S. National Park Service said the recovery of the body of a 46-year-old man near Crystal Rapids along the Colorado River has been completed. The number of people unaccounted for fell from an initial estimate of more than 20 after searches continued in Bright Angel Canyon and Phantom Ranch. By Sunday morning, emergency crews had evacuated 62 people from Phantom Ranch and the lower section of the North Kaibab Trail. The fast-moving water destroyed nearly all of the bridge over Bright Angel Creek and damaged the Transcanyon Waterline, prompting Stage 4 water restrictions in the South Rim starting Monday afternoon and the suspension of lodging services inside the park.
