FIFA's Infantino ignored plea to skip Dominican youth event
What's new: Conmebol and CAF still back him, but Concacaf's president warned his visit would deepen FIFA's governance crisis.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino traveled to the Dominican Republic for the CFU Under-14 Series after Concacaf President Victor Montagliani urged him to stay away, warning the visit would overshadow the youth tournament. The dispute comes as Infantino faces backlash over his aborted FIFA Forward Enterprise plan to sell stakes in World Cup and other tournament revenues to private investors. In a letter seen by broadcasters, Montagliani wrote that media attention on FIFA's governance crisis would undermine the event's focus. Despite that request, Infantino appeared in Punta Cana and met Dominican political and football officials. BBC and the Guardian reported he also brushed off questions about resigning amid calls from parts of world football for him to step down.
