Fifa rebukes Infantino critics as pressure builds over ouster push
What's new: Uefa is exploring an emergency congress, but more than half of Fifa's 211 members would be needed to remove him.
Fifa escalated its defense of president Gianni Infantino on Saturday, accusing unnamed critics of waging a coordinated campaign to weaken both him and the organization as fallout widened over his abandoned World Cup rights sell-off plan. The intervention came after reports tied fresh scrutiny to an alleged past relationship during Infantino's time at Uefa, an allegation Fifa called false. Uefa has said it no longer has confidence in him, while Norway's football federation has urged him to resign. Any attempt to force him out would face steep numbers: an emergency Fifa Congress could be called, but 106 of the body's 211 member associations would be required to unseat him.
