Fifa fights push to force Infantino out as boycott threat lingers
What's new: Uefa says it still has no assurance the shelved World Cup rights plan cannot return.
Fifa pushed back Saturday against a growing campaign to remove president Gianni Infantino, calling the effort a bid to “undermine” both him and the organization. The defense came after reports tied the latest pressure to allegations from Infantino’s time at Uefa, which he denies, and after backlash over his abandoned Fifa Forward Enterprise plan. That proposal would have spun off commercial and ticketing rights into a new company and sold a 21% stake to private investors. Uefa says it has lost confidence in Infantino, Norway’s football chief Lise Klaveness has urged him to quit, and European officials say a boycott of Fifa events is still possible without firmer guarantees.
