FIFA council keeps Gianni Infantino in Rabat

Infantino and FIFA secretary general apologized for mishandling the private investment plan that triggered a trust crisis.

The FIFA council kept Gianni Infantino as president after a meeting at FIFA's Africa office in Rabat, Morocco, on Wednesday (5/8/2026), amid pressure over a private investment proposal that was later dropped. After the meeting, FIFA issued full support from its executive ranks, including Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom. In a letter to vice presidents, council members and 211 member associations, Infantino and Grafstrom apologized for the "mistakes" in handling the FIFA Forward Enterprise plan. The proposal had offered each association 40 million dollars if it backed an investment scheme tied to FIFA tournaments, including the men's and women's World Cup. UEFA had earlier said it had lost confidence in Infantino and called the plan not transparent.
