FIFA clears VAR official after probe into hand sign at World Cup
What's new: Shaun Evans remains eligible for the tournament, and FIFA's broadcast later stopped showing VAR crews posing on camera.
FIFA cleared video assistant referee Shaun Evans after investigating a hand gesture shown before Germany's 7-1 World Cup win over Curacao in Dallas. The Australian official was seen making an upside-down OK sign as the host broadcast cut to the VAR room, prompting online scrutiny because the symbol can be used as a white supremacist gesture. FIFA's disciplinary committee found no evidence Evans breached its code. Evans said the movement was an involuntary, subconscious twitch and that later footage showed him repeating it while holding a pen. He said he did not knowingly make any symbol or message. Fare had urged FIFA to remove him from the tournament. Evans remains available for selection.
