Festival Merah Putih in Jakarta spotlights kebaya, women-led MSMEs
Kowani says kebaya preservation can spur artisans, tailors, designers and MSMEs, not just safeguard cultural heritage.
Kongres Wanita Indonesia, Perempuan Indonesia Maju and Perkumpulan Perempuan Minang Indonesia held the Festival Merah Putih at Hotel Borobudur Jakarta on Sunday (23/8/2026). The event combined the Parade Kebaya Merah Putih, a talk show, art performances and activities involving children and young people. PIM Chair Lana T Koentjoro said the festival grew out of cooperation among women's organizations to strengthen unity and instill love for Indonesian culture from an early age. Kowani Chair for the 2024-2029 term Nannie Hadi Tjahjanto said preserving the kebaya also carries economic benefits because it involves artisans, tailors, designers and MSME actors, and is linked to education, entrepreneurship, the creative industry and efforts to strengthen the community economy.
