FBI tracks water-system cyber incidents in at least 7 US states

What's new: CISA warned hackers have triggered boil-water notices and forced some utilities into manual operations.

US authorities are warning that cyberattacks on water and wastewater systems are spreading beyond Minnesota, with the FBI saying utilities in at least seven states have reported incidents and some attacks degraded operations. The warning followed a coordinated attack on more than 30 Minnesota community water systems on July 26 and 27. CISA said hackers have increasingly targeted internet-connected control technology, including programmable logic controllers, changing passwords, disconnecting devices and in some cases causing boil-water notices, pressure loss and flooding. State officials said the Minnesota incidents did not threaten water safety, though some systems were taken offline and reset manually. Investigators are examining whether Iranian-linked hackers were involved.
