Extreme heat raises World Cup risks for players and fans
Why it matters: Researchers flagged Miami as a top concern, with heat and humidity that could push conditions near 100 degrees.
Extreme heat is emerging as a major concern as the World Cup opens across Mexico, the United States and Canada. PBS reported that several US host cities are expected to swelter during opening matches, raising risks for player performance and fan safety. Douglas Casa of the Korey Stringer Institute said the tournament could bring some of the harshest environmental conditions for soccer seen in the US. He singled out Miami as the site of greatest concern, with temperatures that could reach 100 degrees alongside 80% humidity. Climate Central also analyzed warming trends across all 16 host sites, as scientists and trainers warn that hotter summers are reshaping how major sports events prepare for competition.
