Explosive drone blasts near Bulgaria-Romania border gas pipeline

What's new: Bulgaria moved troops and anti-drone measures to the border after the aircraft exploded about 1,000 meters from a compressor station.

An explosive-laden drone entered Bulgarian airspace and blew up near the Kardam border crossing with Romania, about 1,000 meters from a compressor station on the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline, Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev said Friday. No one was hurt. Radev said authorities have not identified the drone’s origin or type, but called it a larger aircraft rather than a hobby drone. Romanian border police recorded its sound before Bulgarian patrols saw black smoke after the blast. Bulgaria has since increased surveillance and plans to redeploy troops and anti-drone systems along the border. The pipeline links Turkey to Ukraine, and the incident adds to a string of drone episodes around the Black Sea involving NATO countries near the war in Ukraine.
