EU orders TikTok to revamp For You feed or face fines up to 6%
What's next: TikTok can contest the preliminary findings before the bloc decides whether to impose penalties under the Digital Services Act.
The European Union accused TikTok of breaching its digital rulebook and demanded changes to the design of its personalized For You feed, saying the system can trap users, including minors, in harmful content loops. The European Commission said TikTok’s recommendation engine keeps serving similar videos based on scrolling, likes and viewing time, even when users signal disinterest, which can intensify exposure to material tied to sadness, isolation, weight loss or body image. Regulators want TikTok to give more weight to explicit user choices, stop relying on viewing time as a recommendation signal and make controls easier to use. If the preliminary findings are upheld, TikTok could face a fine of as much as 6% of its annual global revenue.
