England’s Quansah draws 2-game FIFA ban after Mexico red card

What’s next: The defender will miss Saturday’s quarterfinal with Norway and any semifinal if England advances.

England defender Jarell Quansah received a two-match suspension from FIFA after his red card in the 3-2 World Cup last-16 win over Mexico. FIFA’s disciplinary committee classified the 54th-minute challenge on Jesus Gallardo as serious foul play, adding one extra match to the automatic one-game ban. The 23-year-old Bayer Leverkusen player will miss Saturday’s quarterfinal against Norway in Miami and, if England advances, a semifinal against Argentina or Switzerland. He would be eligible only for the July 19 final in New Jersey. The ruling leaves Thomas Tuchel short at right-back, with Reece James still working back from a hamstring injury and Marc Guehi also carrying a hamstring problem.
