Elversberg opened its first Bundesliga season with a stunning 3-2 home win over Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, racing to an early lead and then holding off a late rally. Lukas Petkov and Cole Campbell scored within a minute of each other before the 10-minute mark, and David Mokwa added a third early in the second half at the Ursapharm-Arena. Patrik Schick and Christian Kofane cut the deficit late, but Leverkusen could not find an equalizer. Elversberg, a club from a town of about 13,000 people, is the smallest settlement ever to host a Bundesliga team. The result spoiled the debut league match for Leverkusen coach Carles Martínez Novell and gave the promoted hosts a landmark victory in front of 9,307 fans.
