Elversberg beat Leverkusen 3-2 in first Bundesliga match
What's new: The promoted club from a town of 13,000 led 2-0 inside 10 minutes and held off a late Leverkusen rally.
Bundesliga newcomer Elversberg marked its top-flight debut with a 3-2 home win over Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, pulling off one of the opening weekend’s biggest shocks. Lukas Petkov and Cole Campbell scored within a minute of each other before the 10-minute mark, and David Mokwa added a third early in the second half in front of 9,307 fans at the Ursapharm-Arena. Patrik Schick and Christian Kofane cut the deficit late, but Leverkusen could not complete the comeback. The Saarland club, from a town of about 13,000 near the French border, became the smallest settlement ever to host a Bundesliga side.
