El-Sayed wins Michigan Senate primary, setting up Rogers race

Abdul El-Sayed won Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary, defeating Rep. Haley Stevens and advancing to a November race against Republican Mike Rogers in one of the year’s highest-stakes contests. The seat is open because Democratic Sen. Gary Peters is retiring. El-Sayed, a former Michigan health official backed by Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, overcame heavy outside spending that favored Stevens. PBS said outside groups spent more than $60 million in the race, while BBC reported Aipac-backed spending helped give Stevens a major financial edge. El-Sayed now must broaden his coalition in a battleground state as Democrats look to reclaim control of the Senate.
