El-Sayed grandparents mark Michigan win that breaks Senate barrier
What's new: Jan and Judy Johnson told ABC they expect to celebrate Thanksgiving with Abdul El-Sayed after his history-making victory.
Jan and Judy Johnson, the grandparents of Michigan senator-elect Abdul El-Sayed, reflected on his victory this week as he prepares to become the first Muslim American elected to the U.S. Senate. In an interview with ABC News Live on Friday, the couple described El-Sayed as energetic, disciplined and focused on helping people, saying they had supported him since childhood. El-Sayed lived with them while attending the University of Michigan, and they later appeared in a campaign ad backing his Senate bid. The Johnsons, who are Presbyterian deacons, also described their family as interfaith and said they tried to stay positive during attacks on El-Sayed over his Muslim faith.
