El-Sayed edges Stevens in Michigan Senate primary, setting up fall test

Abdul El-Sayed won Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary by a narrow margin over Rep. Haley Stevens, handing progressives a high-profile victory in a battleground state ahead of November’s midterm election. With more than 95% of votes counted, Associated Press tallies cited by CNN Indonesia showed El-Sayed at about 48.5% to Stevens’ 47.5%, a gap of fewer than 15,000 votes. El-Sayed, a former Wayne County health official backed by Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, ran on Medicare for All, lower drug costs, higher taxes on the wealthy and campaign finance reform. He now advances to face Republican Mike Rogers in a general election that could shape control of the Senate.
