El-Sayed apologizes to Michigan Jewish Democrats as Senate race heats up

What's new: The Democratic nominee said his synagogue-attack comments “weren’t the time for context” but refused to break with supporter Hasan Piker.

Michigan Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed apologized over remarks he made after an attack on a suburban Detroit synagogue, telling the Michigan Democrats’ Jewish Caucus and Fox News Digital that his response may have hurt people and “wasn’t the time for context.” El-Sayed had said after the March attack, “Hurt people, hurt people,” drawing criticism from Democrats including Dana Nessel. He said he condemned the attack outright and did not mean to justify it. But El-Sayed stopped short of repudiating Hasan Piker, the left-wing streamer backing his campaign. The issue adds to Democratic tensions over antisemitism as El-Sayed, who defeated Haley Stevens in the primary, faces Republican Mike Rogers in a key Michigan Senate contest.
