Egypt seeks parliament’s OK to help defend Saudi Arabia
What’s new: Cairo called an emergency session after fresh drone interceptions and a recent Houthi strike on Riyadh airport killed 13 people.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi asked parliament to authorize possible military support for Saudi Arabia if the kingdom requests help, as Houthi attacks on Saudi targets intensify. Egypt’s parliament scheduled an emergency session for Sunday after Sisi said Cairo would take any necessary measures to protect Saudi security and stability, while stressing Egypt was not seeking to attack anyone. Saudi Arabia said it intercepted four drones over Riyadh, the Eastern Province and the South within hours. The move would deepen Egypt’s role in the Saudi-led coalition, where it has focused mainly on Red Sea maritime security since 2015. The latest escalation follows renewed fighting in Yemen after a truce collapsed.
