Earthquake damage leaves hundreds in Mbay praying in tents

Masjid Agung Baiturrahman remains unsafe after the M7.7 Flores quake, shifting Friday prayers to a temporary site.

Hundreds of earthquake survivors in Mbay, Nagekeo Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, held Friday prayers in a temporary tent on Friday (28/8) after Masjid Agung Baiturrahman was damaged by the quake. The tent was erected beside the mosque and used as a provisional place of worship because the building is not yet safe to use. The magnitude 7.7 quake shook Flores on 15 August 2026. The epicenter was about 30 kilometers northeast of Mbay at a depth of 15 kilometers. BMKG recorded shaking in Mbay at VII MMI. After the quake, worship continued at temporary facilities while disaster response and repairs to damaged buildings continued.
