DPR weighs ban on police ties to civic groups in Polri bill

The proposal emerges as lawmakers review 20 problem items in the Polri bill, including retirement age and active-duty assignments.

Commission III of the DPR is discussing the possibility of barring Polri members from affiliating with community organizations in the revision of the Polri Law. The idea emerged during a public input meeting when Commission III chairman Habiburokhman raised the ethics of Polri members or leaders declaring themselves part of a particular civic group. He urged that police independence be defined not only as neutrality from practical politics, but also as freedom from affiliations with groups outside the institution. UPI professor Cecep Darmawan said the idea was visionary, but suggested it be noted or included in police regulations rather than written into law. Separately, the government is preparing to discuss 20 problem inventory items in the Polri bill, including new provisions, as the revision enters the 2026 Priority Prolegnas.
