DOJ widens Alaska Senate probe with 100-plus subpoenas

What's new: federal agents also visited donors as voting neared an end, while target letters can precede indictments but do not guarantee charges.

The Justice Department intensified its criminal investigation into Alaska’s Senate race, issuing more than 100 subpoenas and sending target and records-preservation letters tied to the candidacy of Dan J. Sullivan, a retired teacher on the ballot alongside Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan. The probe centers on whether the second Sullivan was recruited to confuse voters and siphon support in the contest with Democrat Mary Peltola. PBS, citing people briefed on the matter, reported that election lawyer Marc Elias received one of the target letters. Federal agents also visited donors connected to Dan J. Sullivan’s campaign. Separately, the department appealed a judge’s dismissal of its civil challenge to the ballot as voting was set to end Tuesday.
