DOJ seeks to block Alaska Senate vote certification over 2nd Dan Sullivan

What's next: The suit would delay certification if Sen. Dan Sullivan loses by fewer votes than the total won by the other Daniel J. Sullivan.

The Justice Department filed suit to stop Alaska from certifying its Senate election if Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan loses in a result narrow enough that another candidate with the same name could have changed the outcome. The federal complaint argues that listing Daniel J. Sullivan on the ballot risks voter confusion and could taint the result. President Donald Trump said he personally pushed for the case. Polls cited by BBC show Democrat Mary Peltola holding a slim edge before the Nov. 3 vote. Alaska's Supreme Court had already rejected efforts to remove the second Sullivan, a retired teacher, from the ballot. Under Alaska's ranked-choice system, voters can rank both candidates.
