DOJ probes whether Binance breached 2023 $4.3 billion deal

What's new: prosecutors are also examining possible Iran sanctions violations tied to trading and $61 million in alleged laundered oil proceeds.

The Justice Department is reviewing whether Binance complied with its 2023 settlement with the US government, while also investigating potential Iran sanctions violations linked to activity on the exchange. The settlement required Binance to pay a $4.3 billion penalty, plead guilty to banking-rule violations and accept tighter compliance controls. In September, the US Attorney’s Office in Manhattan sought forfeiture of $61 million it said came from Iranian black-market oil sales and was laundered through Binance. DOJ official Tysen Duva said the review is ongoing but gave no details and did not say Binance had violated the deal. Binance said it is strengthening controls and cooperating with law enforcement.
