DOJ accuses Duke Law of race bias in 2025 admissions

What's new: Investigators wrote that Black applicants had about 3.5 times the admission odds of similarly credentialed Asian applicants.

The Justice Department accused Duke University School of Law of using race in its 2025 admissions process, saying Black and Hispanic applicants received an edge over White and Asian applicants with similar academic records. The department’s Civil Rights Division said its review found Black applicants had roughly 3.5 times the chance of admission as Asian applicants with the same credentials, and that the median LSAT score for accepted Black applicants was lower than for rejected Asian and White applicants. The investigation began in April 2025 and is part of a broader Trump administration push to enforce the Supreme Court’s 2023 Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard ruling barring race-conscious admissions.
