Disney sued FCC to block early ABC license renewals
Why it matters: The case tests whether the Trump administration can use broadcast licensing to pressure newsroom and entertainment content.
Disney and its eight ABC-owned television stations sued the Federal Communications Commission on Tuesday, asking a court to halt an accelerated license-renewal process the company says was launched to punish the network over its programming. The lawsuit targets the FCC and Chairman Brendan Carr after the agency in April ordered early renewals for ABC stations whose licenses otherwise were due between 2028 and 2031. Disney said the move was unprecedented and tied to complaints by President Donald Trump about ABC coverage and shows including Jimmy Kimmel's late-night program. Carr has argued broadcasters using public airwaves must meet public-interest obligations. Disney is seeking a speedy hearing and temporary court relief.
