Democrats win control of U.S. House and Senate, jolting Trump
New York Times quick count puts Democrats at 54 Senate seats and 238 House seats, triggering blame-shifting among Republicans.
Democrats won full control of the U.S. Congress after leading in the Nov. 3 midterm elections, with victories in the Senate and the House of Representatives. A New York Times quick count cited by CNN Indonesia showed Democrats taking 54 Senate seats, while the Republican Party had 44. In the House, Democrats held 238 seats, well ahead of Republicans with 147. The result was a political setback for President Donald Trump, who rejected it as a personal defeat and instead blamed his party's candidates. On the Republican side, several lawmakers also traded attacks and described the election as a referendum on Trump's leadership, including the impact of the Iran war and economic policies seen as unpopular.
