Democrats sweep Texas, ending 38-year Senate drought

What's new: The party also won the governor's race and flipped the Texas House as every county shifted left.

Democrats swept Texas in the 2026 midterms, breaking a 38-year losing streak in the state's US Senate race and capturing top offices across the ballot. James Talarico won the Senate contest, while Gina Hinojosa defeated three-term Gov. Greg Abbott, ending Republican dominance in a state long seen as a GOP stronghold. Democrats also flipped the Texas House of Representatives. The shift reached across Texas, with every county moving left and 13 rural counties changing from red to blue, including movement in Republican bastions such as Collin and Denton counties. The Straits Times reported young, Asian and Latino voters powered the gains, with Democrats winning Hispanic voters by 42 points.
