Democrats build cash edge in midterms as Musk fuels GOP super PACs

Why it matters: Candidate cash can go further late in a race, while billionaire-backed outside spending may cost Republicans more to match it.

New federal filings show Democrats opening a broad fundraising advantage in key Senate and House races heading into the Nov. 3 midterm elections, even as Republicans draw heavy outside support from super PACs backed by Elon Musk and other billionaires. CNBC reported Democratic Senate candidates raised far more than GOP rivals in several battlegrounds, including James Talarico in Texas at $60.2 million, Jon Ossoff in Georgia at $33.1 million and Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan at $30.7 million from July through September. In House tossups, Democrats outraised Republicans in 13 of 21 races rated Toss Up by Cook. The filings point to a split money picture: Democrats hold stronger campaign accounts, while Republicans rely more on outside groups as inflation and President Donald Trump’s approval ratings weigh on the party.
