BEM UI rally in Jakarta prompts traffic rerouting, 510 deployed
Authorities urged motorists and long-distance rail passengers to avoid Monas, Tugu Tani and Bundaran HI.
A BEM UI rally with a civil society coalition in Jakarta on Wednesday triggered traffic rerouting at several points in the city center, with 510 DKI Jakarta Transportation Agency personnel on standby. Congestion was expected at Bundaran HI, Monas, Tugu Tani and the area around the DPR/MPR RI complex. The TMC of Polda Metro Jaya said the action would run from 10.00 WIB until it ended, while the DKI transportation agency said traffic management was being set for a protest scheduled to start at 12.00 WIB. DKI Transportation Agency head Budi Awaluddin urged residents to use alternative routes and adjust their travel times. Long-distance train passengers boarding or disembarking at Gambir Station were also asked to avoid the surrounding area. The rally coincided with Hari Sumpah Pemuda and focused on forest and land fires, law enforcement, human rights, freedom of expression, education and anti-corruption.
